Actually, this is how I feel EVERY time I enter the DN fanfiction archive.
I know that feeling. Not that I have a problem with slash in itself, but a lot of the slash pairings presented just don't make any sense to me. I'm probably gonna be shot for this but I consider L/Light a glorified crack pairing. And the attitude of many of its supporters hasn't helped my opinion on it.
And you're right about something else, too: the slash fics really do all read the same.
Cool/true comic. *applaud*
As for AU, maybe there's decent stuff there, i've never read AU DN stuff, though for many series i think AU might suit slash fics better.
But yeah, as with most fandoms, a lot/most is (just short of) utter shite, as it is either badly written and/or completely OOC.
And yeah...probably why I made this comic in the first place...
...yeah, I'm hopeless. orz.
It stifles variety
Especially in DN, it's either one of them gets their original canon character stripped away until they're more girly and well suited to the dominate partner. But I don't complain, Death Note was AWESOME! And if you don't like the fanfiction available you can always write your own lol.
But the above comic wasn't about that. It was basically just about the overflowing abundance of yaoi that floods through it, and it was also more about me finding a lack of variety in the fandom. And, of course, me going through the mind-boggling experience of grasping just HOW POPULAR a guy who appears for a total of 5 minutes can get.
(Oh, and this comic is really funny, by the way.)
Case in point- Naomi Misora. She outsmarted BEYOND. Her IQ is on par with both L and Light. She's smart, and was supposed to have a larger role in the manga, but she would have beat Light too early.
Misa isn't really that stupid- misguided and obsessive is a better term. The thing is, she KNOWS she's being manipulated, but she doesn't care. Remember, she saw her ENTIRE family killed in front of her. She's traumatized, and since Light killed the perp, he's the one person she can cling too. She was smart enough to find him, and she was smart enough to take down Higuchi. And, unlike most of the people that Light manipulates, Misa is very much aware that she's just his pawn.
She's a very interesting character. I'm actually kind of sad that the author didn't play with her character more, its very complex and disturbed.
